Ijen Crater Tour

Waking up in the middle of the night and trekking up inside a crater sound enticing? Add a gas mask and walk into a cloud of sulfur gas while watching blue flames. Enticed yet? You should be. Trekking up to the Mount Ijen Crater Volcano is one of the most epic adventures in East Java.

The beautiful island of Bali has so much to offer that it can be nearly impossible to fit everything in. One of the most exciting things it provides is its famous active volcano hikes. Among them are Mount Batur, Mount Bratan and Mount Agung – which have caused quite a few disruptions over the past few years.

But if you want to be blown away, we recommend booking this private Ijen Crater Tour. Also known as the Kawah Ijen Crater, it is spectacular, featuring the largest acid lake in the world and the only natural ‘blue fire’ on earth!

Trekking up the Ijen Crater is an exciting adventure because you have a few different elements. Firstly, you are waking up in the middle of the night to start the experience, so it is cold. Secondly, you are going to be hiking in the dark. Thirdly, you will be very close to toxic sulfur gas as you observe the blue flames inside the crater. It is not your typical hike and requires a certain level of preparation but nothing too intense.

Ijen Crater is a quiet but active volcano. The terrain is towered by the volcanic cones of Ijen (2,368 asl) and Merapi (2,800 asl) on the northeastern edge of the Plateau and Raung (3,332 asl) on the southwestern corner. The Ijen Crater was a huge active crater, 134 sq km. The Ijen Crater, also known as ‘Kawah Ijen’, is highly recommended for nature enthusiasts and hikers.

Ijen Crater is the biggest crater lake in Java. It is 200 meters deep and contains about a 36million cubic meters of steaming acid water, shrouded in a smelling swirling sulfur cloud. The sulfur crater lake lies between a natural dam of deeply etched rock. Inside the crater, the different colours and sizes of stones are found. Indeed the crater of Ijen is a beautiful garden of stone as well.

The view of sulfur miners climbing and going down to the crater is also excellent. A man puts about 10 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. It is a realistic picture that can be seen every day.

A refreshing chill breeze will immediately greet you when you arrive here after walking through a road surrounded by lush greeneries. The beauty of Ijen Crater has been recognized across the world. In March 2016, this magical lake was included in UNESCO’s World Biosphere Reserves.

The air around Ijen Crater usually gets about 10 degrees celsius daily. Occasionally, it might even hit 2 degrees celsius.

During the day, the mesmerizing sight of sunlight beaming on a turquoise lake enveloped with smokes will give you an everlasting impression. Several small vents can be found surrounding the crater. They are a source of work for sulfur miners, making their way up and down from the crater to the lake daily.

At dawn, you can have a chance to witness an incredible natural phenomenon where blue-tinted flames will appear around the crater. Many know this phenomenon as the Blue Fire usually occurs around 05:00 am.

Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen)

Ijen Crater is most famous for its one-of-a-kind blue fire and for being home to the world’s largest acid lake. But it is so much more. The hike is beautiful, but it is not for the faint-hearted. The area is home to many other volcanoes and hills which are absolutely breathtaking.

You do not have to be super fit to undertake the hike, but keep in mind that it is pretty steep. From the hike’s starting point, it takes around 1 hour to reach Kawah Ijen base camp. And from there, it takes about another 2 hours at a reasonable pace to reach the peak. Once you reach the peak, your guide will instruct you to put your gas mask on to protect your lungs from sulfuric gas.

After reaching the top, you can walk down into the crater, but again, it is steep! The sun usually starts to rise at about 5:30 am, so be sure to grab yourself a nice little viewing spot and prepare to be amazed! Around 4 am is the best time to reach the acid lake for a chance to witness the natural show of the blue fire.

Ijen Blue Fire

The Ijen Crater is actually a well-known sulfur mining site. The blue fire derives from the mining activity and is ignited by sulfuric gas, which emerges from cracks. Many miners will be carrying heavy loads (between 75 and 90 kg!) up to the crater.

The best time to see a blue fire in the Ijen Crater is 1 hour after sunset and 1 hour before sunrise because the blue colour will appear more clearly when the sky is dark.

This phenomenon is caused by the combustion of sulfur, of which Ijen has several of the best levels in the world. The sulfuric gases are released from cracks within the rock at air mass and sometimes at far more than 1,112°.

As with every natural sighting, its height and intensity depend on various conditions and cannot be predicted. The flames have reached more than 5 meters in size, but this is not always the case. It is always a unique experience, and you are guaranteed to get some pretty amazing photographs.
