Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary

Melaka has many amazing things to do and see! From its rich cultural and historical influence to its Instagrammable places. The Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary is the perfect place for anyone who loves pretty butterflies and a day out in the sun!

Melaka has some beautiful flora and fauna. One of the best places to see the best flora and fauna is at the Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary that sits a little way outside the city in Ayer Keroh.

Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary, locally known as Taman Rama-Rama dan Reptilia Melaka, is an 11-acre butterfly and reptile sanctuary and zoo in Ayer Keroh. It is one of the most famous natural attractions in the city.

Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary is home to thousands of Malaysian butterflies, insects and reptiles.

It is a private zoological park complete with a wide collection of creepy crawlies ranging from small lizards to giant reptiles. This includes 1 species of highly endangered crocodiles under its conservation program and more than 20 species of snakes in its reptile section.

The Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary are Larva Center, Pupa House, Tarantula Adventure, and the Bugs Kingdom.

Each of these houses has different species, like butterflies, reptiles, insects, koi fish, and so much more. The sanctuary is also the home to the two rare golden leopards and almost instinct Raja Brooke, the national butterfly of Malaysia.

Opened to the public on 1st February, 1991, the Sanctuary had undergone many transformations to become a premier conservation centre known today.

Later, the management changed its motto, “Continuous Discovery” the reptiles were also included in the park. It then got renamed as the butterfly and reptile park.

The beautiful sight of the flying butterflies has captured the heart of every visitor. With the well-maintained vegetation and aura at this park, the lush green tropical gardens offer great views of its residents. Many different species of butterflies are housed at distinct locations in the park.

The Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary also has the World’s Highest Density Butterfly Aviary! Imagine a place where you are surrounded by thousands of butterflies where flowers burst with colours and life.

Watching these butterflies dance in the sunlight with water trickling over the garden stones will remind you just how simple and beautiful life can be. Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary also has many other species such as crocodiles, alligators, iguanas, snakes, birds and sulcata tortoises. The Reptile Walk House has the most species of snakes in Malaysia. They are indeed full of mystery and completely adorable.

Be it boas, pythons, vipers or cobras, they have them all under one roof. Here, the giant Burmese python awaits you! Where size does matter! Be amazed by the 20-foot python, of which many associates the species as fearsome man-eaters.

Sections in Butterfly and Reptile Park

Koi River Valley

This part of the butterfly and reptile park is one of the most scenic attractions here. The sound of rustling water will lure you in.

One can see hundreds of colourful carp swimming the waters of the ponds here. Their ponds are adorned with tropical plants and miniature waterfalls, making them feel more in their natural home.

It has been welcoming its visitors since October 2008 and makes an excellent spot for capturing souvenir photos of your vacation at this park. One can also get great clicks at the wild photo lane. It also allows visitors to take personalised shots with the giant green iguana, red-tailed boa, Burmese python, etc.

Butterfly Garden

The lush green aura lures the heart of every visitor the instant one enters into this section of butterfly and Reptile Park.

Your level of being astonished will be surpassed with the sight of hundreds of colourful butterflies flying freely around you. It is a premier attraction of the butterfly and reptile park and houses almost 20 distinct species of butterflies.

One of them is Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing which is the national butterfly of Malaysia. It got its name after the King of Sarawak, Sir James Brooke.

Other species found here are Malayan birdwing, the black and white Helen and others. This sight of butterflies is a perfect treat to the eyes at this location.

Reptile Aviary

One would surely get goosebumps with the sight of the most venomous snakes known to mankind here. These include pythons, boas, cobras, vipers and others. The awe-striking ones are the 20ft reticulated python, giant Burmese python and the long-nose whip snakes that remain camouflaged in the leaves of trees in this aviary.
