Hiking Mount Raung [4D3N]

Mount Raung is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. Still, amidst the danger, it is a beautiful view of looking down at the world from over the clouds, 3.000 meters high. The mountain itself has two paths: one is the northern route from Sumberwaringin, which has accommodation set up along the route and guides, and the other one is the southern route near Kalibaru, which is a more strenuous trek for more experienced travellers.

The beauty of this mountain is not only at its peak as the entire journey is scenic and relatively rubbish free. A perfect choice for a daring adventurer looking for a memorable experience.

Blessed with a gorgeous panoramic landscape, East Java is home to spectacular volcanic peaks with some of the best viewpoints in Indonesia. There are four volcanic peaks higher than 3,000 m in the region. This volcanic activity has created a sizeable fertile area, and verdant agriculture is a prominent feature of the site.

Mount Raung is one of the most active volcanoes on the island of Java, Indonesia. Located in the province of East Java, the mountain has 2-kilometer-wide and 300 m -deep caldera surrounded by a greyish rim. The highest peak of Mount Raung stands at 3,344m above sea level. It offers the most challenging trail as compared to other mountains in Java.

Mount Raung is a part of the Ijen mountains, the easternmost mountains on Java island. These mountains extend across 4 regencies of East Java: Bondowoso, Jember, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi. Mount Raung, apart from the rest because it is 2km wide and 500m deep caldera, actively smoking as of mid-2019.

Mount Raung is one of Indonesia’s 130 active volcanoes. The earliest recorded eruption took place in 1586, and there were many fatalities. There were a few more eruptions between 1586 and 1817, out of which around five were deadly.

The last eruption took place in July 2015. The airport had to shut down, and all flights to the area were cancelled. Many were asked to evacuate from the surrounding areas.

Mount Raung is not a popular hike. It is probably the most challenging summit to bag in all of Java, so it is generally not possible for most inexperienced climbers. Its volcanology turns off others. This all means that those with the skills and the daring to climb will enjoy a more private and challenging climb.
